Iguazú overnight base

Stay in Puerto Iguazú or Foz do Iguaçu?

Choose the town that fits your longer park day and airport, then calculate the border and early-gate journeys separately.

Start with the verdict

Verdict

Make this decision first

Puerto Iguazú is the lower-friction base when the Argentine circuits are the centre of the trip; APN locates the park about 18 km from town and lists bus, taxi and transfer options. Foz do Iguaçu is the practical Brazilian base for a Polo Cataratas-focused visit. For a two-side trip, keep one base when the transfer cost is acceptable, or change hotels only if flight and park sequence justify repacking. A cheaper room across the border is not cheaper once immigration, late returns and pickup rules are included.

Useful next steps

Use the right booking doorway

Official park rules remain the authority. A general accommodation platform is a search tool, not a specific property endorsement.

Review Argentine access and transport

Decision structure

What changes the answer

Use these differences to shape the trip. They are durable planning context, not live operating status.

Base near the park that needs the full day

The Argentine circuits and ecological train reward an early arrival and unhurried walking.

  • Use Puerto Iguazú when the Argentine park is the priority and check the dated bus or transfer to its entrance.
  • Use Foz do Iguaçu when the Brazilian panorama, local arrival or onward travel dominate.
  • Do not treat either town as walking distance from both park gates.

Plan the other side as a border day

A cross-border park transfer needs documents, operating hours and a return plan.

  • Confirm the exact pickup and whether the transport waits through immigration.
  • Verify nationality-specific entry and re-entry rules before a nonrefundable room choice.
  • For a late flight, avoid depending on a border return with no time buffer.

Compare total cost and flexibility

Nightly room rate alone misses transport and lost park time.

  • Compare the room, transfer, park ticket and cancellation terms as separate lines.
  • A hotel advertised as “Iguazú Falls” may be far from the chosen park entrance.
  • Use a general lodging platform only as a search tool; verify the address and pickup directly.

Iguazú and Iguaçu National Parks

Two separately managed national parks frame the same waterfall system. Argentina is a circuit-and-train walking day from Puerto Iguazú; Brazil offers a broad falls panorama from Foz do Iguaçu. Each side has its own admission, transport and border obligations.
