Can You Visit Yosemite Without a Car?

Build a Yosemite Valley-centered visit around YARTS and the free Valley shuttle, then test each non-Valley objective against seasonal service.

Start with the verdict

Verdict

Make this decision first

Yes, especially when you can reach a Highway 140 YARTS stop and stay in or near Yosemite Valley. The Valley shuttle covers many core stops, but it is not a park-wide network. Glacier Point, Mariposa Grove, Tioga Road, and Hetch Hetchy have very different seasonal or absent transit. A car-free itinerary succeeds by choosing reachable objectives before booking the room.

Useful next steps

Use the right booking doorway

Official park rules remain the authority. A general accommodation platform is a search tool, not a specific property endorsement.

Decision structure

What changes the answer

Use these differences to shape the trip. They are durable planning context, not live operating status.

Choose the inbound YARTS corridor first

NPS lists Highway 140 service from Merced, Mariposa, Midpines, and El Portal year-round; other YARTS corridors are summer-only.

  • Check the live YARTS route, stop, fare, and final return for your travel date.
  • An Amtrak journey beyond Merced uses a bus connection; verify the connection as one trip.
  • Book a room compatible with the stop and the arrival time, not simply a town name.

Make the Valley the core

Once inside Yosemite Valley, the free shuttle and walking network make many first-visit stops possible without a car.

  • Separate travel to the park from travel around the Valley; they have different schedules.
  • Leave a sensible margin for trail time and the last bus back to the overnight base.
  • NPS says there is no luggage storage in Yosemite; arrange bags around check-in and checkout.

Treat the rest of the park as conditional

NPS lists seasonal or paid transport for some high-country, Glacier Point, Wawona, and Mariposa Grove options, while Hetch Hetchy has no public transportation.

  • Do not assume a Valley shuttle reaches Mariposa Grove or Glacier Point.
  • Check road openings and each separate operator before adding a remote day.
  • If a particular remote trailhead is the reason for the trip, a rental day or guided transport may be a better fit.

Yosemite National Park

A first Yosemite trip depends on separating year-round valley access from seasonal high-country access, choosing a base before collecting viewpoints, and planning parking, overnight reservations, bear-safe food storage, and hiking ambition as one connected system.

These guides cover different parts of the same trip.

Plan Yosemite by Season and Access Layer

Separate Yosemite Valley from the high country before choosing routes, lodging, and daily objectives because the park’s elevation zones do not share one operating season.
