East Africa Safari: Serengeti and Ngorongoro

Choose a Serengeti sector and a separate Ngorongoro crater or highland day, then solve the road or air transfer and each authority’s fees before booking.

Compare your options

First decision

Start with the shape of the trip

Serengeti is a TANAPA national park whose scale rewards several complete wildlife days in one reachable sector. Ngorongoro is an NCAA conservation area whose crater drive needs a compliant vehicle, guide, permits, and legal descent timing. Combine them when there is a real transfer block and both fee systems are itemized; do not buy a migration promise or count travel as a full game drive.

Choose a protected-area plan

Two authorities, two different days

Compare the experience you can actually fit, then ask an operator to show the transport and authority charges line by line.

Planning order

Book the constrained pieces first

A few early choices prevent most avoidable backtracking.

Decide the protected-area mix

A shorter trip may fit a crater day; a Serengeti safari needs more complete days. The areas are complementary, not substitutes with identical rules.

Place camps and transfers

Name the Serengeti sector, camp, and any airstrip; choose a Karatu or rim base when crater timing matters. Keep a long road or air connection as a transfer block.

Itemize official charges

Request TANAPA and NCAA charges, vehicle, guide, crater service, accommodation, and transfer inclusions separately. The authorities are not interchangeable.

Keep the trip ethical and adaptable

Follow designated-road and vehicle rules, respect communities and protected sites, and accept that wildlife movement, weather, and access can change.

Park guides

Choose the park before the stops

These pages cover the park-level experience, hazards, and practical arrival decisions.

Serengeti National Park

A first Serengeti visit is a multi-day, sector-based safari. Decide the travel month, reachable camp, road or air arrival, licensed guide, and park-entry arrangements before trying to predict where wildlife will gather.

Ngorongoro Conservation Area

Ngorongoro is a conservation area managed by NCAA, not a national park. A crater-floor drive requires its own permitted vehicle, guide, descent timing, and fee plan; the wider area also contains highland, archaeological, and cultural landscapes.

Drive Into Serengeti or Fly to an Airstrip?
